Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise when she was just a young girl. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, let her pursue art literature and the theatre in daylight. DuVernay immediately was captivated when she showed her an old 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay learned the art of being a good tool for social activism. DuVernay had an aunt who was socially conscious and taught her to utilize art as a method of expressing herself. Even though DuVernay lived within Compton with her family she lived living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Selma to later direct the documentary of King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English and African American study. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. Her first job was working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to observe the house of one member of the jury and examine their junk. Her work left her dissatisfied in journalism, so she decided to shift her focus towards the industry of public relations. DuVernay joined a small studio as a Junior Publicist immediately after graduation. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
