Yvonne Joyce Craig

Yvonne Joyce Craig (May 16, 1937 - August 17, 2015) was an American actress and ballet dancer most well-known for her performance as Batgirl in the 1960s television series Batman as well as her role as the green-skinned Orion slave girl Marta in the Star Trek episode "Whom Gods Destroy" (1969). The Huffington Post referred to her as "a pioneer of female superheroes" on television. Yvonne Craig was raised in Columbus and was born in Taylorville in Illinois. In 1951 , her family relocated from Illinois to Dallas. There , she was a student at W. H. Adamson High School in Dallas as well as Sunset High School. However she did not finish her education because she had only "one credits for PE". After being discovered by Alexandra Danilova, a ballerina and teacher, Craig joined the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo as its youngest corps de ballet member. This experience was beneficial when she was performing stunts acting as Batgirl. In 1957, she quit the ballet troupe due to a dispute over casting changes. She then moved to Los Angeles with the hope to continue her career in dance. However, she did find herself appearing in film roles. Her first television appearances was on the TV series Perry Mason ("The Case of the Lazy Lover") in the year 1958 with Neil Hamilton. Hamilton later played Batgirl's stepfather, Police Commissioner James Gordon. After that, she appeared in three films: The Young Land, The Gene Krupa Story, and Gidget (all 1959)--and as a guest in the TV series Mr. Lucky as Beverly Mills in the episode "Little Miss Wow" (also 1959). Craig was seen alongside Bing Crosby and Seven Women from Hell (1960), in which she was joined by Cesar Romero. In 1962, she appeared as guest-starring in Western Laramie's "The Long Road Back" episode. Craig also appeared alongside Bing Crosby on High Time (1960) and Seven Women from Hell (1961) and Seven Women from Hell (1961), both of which featured Cesar Romero. Craig also starred in two Elvis Presley films: It happened at the World's Fair (1963), as well as Kissin Cousins (1964). She also appeared in the science fiction film Mars Needs Women (1966) and also appeared in In Like Flint (1967) as a Russian dancer who was paired with James Coburn.
